Navajo rug - stitching completed!

by brae

Hooray!  I've completed stitching for the Navajo rug!  :D

My total stitching time ended up being 189.5 hours.  Whew!  I had estimated it to be 204 hours, so I am pleased to have finished ahead of schedule by 14.5 hours.

I think the estimate was off since the halfway mark of 102 hours did include a little more stitching than exactly half, and once you get going on a project you become more adept.  Stitching tends to get rather motivated in that last stretch, too!

Just past the halfway mark - 102 hours

Of course, everyone always looks at the back.  ;]  This was stitched on 32 ct Jobelan in parchment, and there are 43,407 stitches.

This project was based on a contemporary Navajo original weaving, shown here with Steve Getzwiller.

Natalia Frank of Scarlet Sails Miniatures did a wonderful job of charting it for me.  So, I send a huge thank you to Natalia, who is not only a gifted artist but a very classy lady.  :]

I made some minor alterations to Natalia's chart for my final rug, including choosing my own coloration to go with the furnishings and décor I had in mind for its future home.

Up next is binding and finishing, which should take a few more hours.  I don't usually count finishing time since it takes whatever it takes.  This rug is destined for the Brownstone (at this moment), but I will take some setup shots once I have it completely finished.

Really beautiful work! And yes, I always look at the back, and that looks beautiful, too! You are really a skilled needleworker. Can't wait to see the room you're putting it in. Kudos to Natalia, too, for charting the design. - Grace

Beautiful work, Brae! The colors you chose are peaceful and complement each other. The work you've done on background is fabulous. Happy cross stitching and good luck with finishing the rug. Natalia

It looks great Brae , well done you! I always smile when reading your counting- score :-). You are so right that the last stretch is fast-track ; I am always sitting with curled toes and willing the stitching to finish when I am on the home stretch of a carpet or any bigger project. Cheers, Elly (Amsterdam)
