Wicker without the work
by brae
There are some amazing artisans out there who make wicker furniture in miniature, like Casey at Casey's Minis. I hope to someday give it a whirl for real, but in the meantime I took some plain old white wire minis and altered them with paint and fabric.
The wicker chair and rattan couch are both by Town Square Miniatures. They look perfectly presentable in white wire, but I wanted a more natural look.
I diluted a bit of Folk Art Nutmeg paint with white and then used a stiff brush to stipple the paint onto the white wire. I took care to keep from applying the paint too thickly or quickly so the spaces between the wires weren't clogged with paint. Here's the furniture after the first coat of paint.
Once dry, I repeated the painting process, this time adding a little Folk Art Mushroom paint to add more depth to the color. Very little white was left showing.
The third coat of paint consisted of Folk Art Nutmeg and Vintage White mixed with glaze medium to lighten the coloration a bit. Since natural wicker furniture has a slight sheen to it, I topped it off with a light coat of Delta Ceramcoat satin varnish with a soft brush.
I made seat cushions for each piece using foam core board covered with fabric.
The image for the pillows is Floral Grace I by Nancy Slocum. I printed the images on fabric and sewed each pillow to a white cotton backing. The pillows are stuffed with seed beads to make them more realistic when arranged.
These beauties are destined for the Newport's conservatory since the black Bespaq set I bought for that room has relocated to the study, but it got too late to set up the room for photographs. :] Good night!!!
