The Spring Fling begins in earnest

by brae

The first major non-kit component arrived in the mail this week, but it was too small.  I can't show you that component, though it would probably confuse Keli even more if I were to do so!  :D  She was at the mini shows with me over the weekend and had no idea why I was buying such a random selection of minis (she doesn't know what I am building for the Spring Fling since she is also entering the contest).

Replacing this item with the next size up meant I won't be able to keep the roughly 20" x 20" board I wanted to use for the base.  I will keep that board for the Brownstone since it will have a small city walled-in yard.

The new base board measures 24" x 24" so it wasn't a huge upgrade, and I have the 1/2" thick builder's foam base cut to the same size as the entire base board, too.  I picked up a set of carving tools from Michaels and will soon begin sculpting the land around the building.  I did a little experimenting with a scrap piece and already love this material.  It might help that I loved the Pink Panther as a kid, and his face is on the back side of the foam.  :D

My replacement component is a much better fit...but enough about that.  Let's get back to the henhouse.

The entire piece was first treated with a wash of tan, black and brown.  I had originally planned to  paint the exterior white, and once that dried, to sand the finish to expose some of the stain beneath for a lovely rustic finish.  I saw a lovely painted wall shelf at the 3 Blind Mice show and thought that finish would work so well here.  BUT...I love the way the stain alone turned out.  Once I paint, there will be no going back.  So, for now, brown it stays.

I used Greenleaf half scale speed shingles that I had left over from the Heritage gables for the roof.  It, too, received the same paint wash.

The nests are made from raffia cut into small pieces and glued in place.  A quick wash of mixed brown paints gave the raffia a more realistic appearance.   It might be a little out of scale, but I think it's convincing enough.  Now I just need some hens, eggs and perhaps a few chicks!  :D

In the meantime, I placed this beautiful carved pintail drake decoy by Linda Master on the ledge.  When she first posted these on her blog, I went weak in the knees.  He will end up in the Brownstone, but for now he is the hen stand-in.

It's such a beautiful work of art.

And in other great news, Sydney won the lottery!!!!  :D  He was featured in the Greenleaf Gazette Critter Corner, for which he will receive a Petsmart gift certificate.  I foresee yogurt yummies in his future.  Thanks, Greenleaf!

I wonder how much it would cost to bribe your mailman into opening all your packages before they're delivered and report the contents? Oh, speaking of packages, I need to mail you the secret ingredient you swapped me lunch for. I just have to find it first....

Congrats Sydney! I saw him in the gazette yesterday afternoon. How exciting to win and be an internet celebrepet :D How much foamy mess was there with the builders foam? I was thinking of using the white craft stuff for a project, but I know the balls static cling onto every surface within a 100 mile radius.
