The Haunted Heritage - latest dry fit
by brae
With the kitchen construction at near completion and only a few items left for the parlor, I decided to do another full dry fit of the house today. The gables and their shingles have warped while in the box, so I'll have to do some minor touchups. But, it actually helps with the worn down appearance. :D
The gable trim will be white, but the roof will be dark like the portico roof. It's a very dramatic contrast I want to keep for the finished build. From the outside, the completed chimney is up to code at a few inches above the tallest portion of the roof. :D
The side windows I added / upgraded work well with the swinging window above.
I'll also need to alter the roof pieces and the wall connectors further, but I am glad I cut the connectors before putting the house together. Refining the fit is easier than making all of the cuts in place.

I'll be starting to work on the upstairs rooms soon. From left to right, there will be a bathroom, an open hallway with a balcony and then the bedroom.
The original kit room dividers are small since interior doors were not intended as part of the original kit, but they do give me an idea of the angles I'll need to cut on new wall boards to accommodate the rooflines. I've cut some spare foam core board for the dividers for now.
There will be a ceiling for the second story, with a small attic as the upper floor. The attic itself is a tight space.
There will be enough room for storage of furnishing, books, etc. This is a damaged Lincoln chest from miniatures.com that I'll likely end of aging for the attic space. The attic mouse is from Sussex Crafts.
It will also be the perfect place to display Tony's wonderful catacombs clock case. Love this piece! I had wanted to work it into general décor of the lower floors, but there was no good place to do it justice. Here it will be unobstructed.
As you can see, the attic floor is shorter than I need to complete the second floor rooms. I will add to the back of the attic floor to solve this problem, and we'll just say the roofline changes in the back to accommodate it. ;]

The original kit intended for a swinging window where the round window is in the bathroom, but I eliminated that when I removed the bay window on the first floor to make room for the fireplace and chimney. I love this round window in the bathroom. I'll have to give stained glass a whirl to add some pizazz.
The bathroom also has a small dormer window that is an awkward little thing. The construction of mine will be different from the original plan for sure. These fixtures are not the ones I intend to use in the final build, but they are good size approximations.

Since I raised the parlor floor below, the bathroom is a shorter than originally intended. It is still tall enough to accommodate my scale model, though. The bathroom is small, so a taller ceiling might have thrown off the balance anyway.

The hallway is just large enough for a narrow door to the bathroom. I think the balcony is going to look wonderful, and I love the two story foyer!

The bedroom will require a step down since I raised the parlor ceiling to accommodate the narrow stairs. The bed (unfinished at the moment) and white chairs will stay in this room; the rest are placeholders.
There are two swinging windows in this room that I will have to figure out. I am hoping to salvage the original kit pieces, but I may have to rebuild all or part of these structures to get them to function properly. I moved the layout around a bit to keep the windows clear of furnishings.
This is going to be an interesting room to wallpaper. :O
