The future of the Newport

by brae Email

In the past two years, I've built two houses to completion: Baslow Ranch and Baxter Pointe Villa.  I have not been able to push through the massive project that is the Newport, though I always figured it would be a five-year project.

I initially acquired the Newport kit and additions to serve as my one and only dollhouse.  I figured it would have enough rooms to create all the ideas in my head, and that was true for the most part.

What I didn't realize at the time was the fact that I mostly enjoy smaller units in specific styles...the old ghost town ranch or the luxury beach villa.  I have plans in my head for an alpine chalet, a Tudor cottage, a lighthouse, a white farmhouse and even a haunted house - who knows if or when I will get to any of them or what ideas will pop up in their place.  :D  The Newport is a lovely home, but it is just too big for me to keep in the long run.

My plan now is to complete the interior finishes and lighting, add the remaining exterior details and fill in some modest landscaping in order to put the house on the market -- hopefully by next spring.  Most of the furniture won't be included but anything permanently attached to the walls and ceilings, including a number of my handmade lighting fixtures, will stay with the house.

I'll be sharing my progress along the way as always.  I'm not especially sad about this decision since I know it will make room for my true focus in miniatures...smaller dwellings in distinct styles.

That had to be a tough decision. I totally understand what you mean, both about space for such a big house and about several smaller projects allowing you to explore artiscally.

Awww, that's too bad to hear about the Newport.. I always look forward to your pictures on it! On the flip side, I totally understand how you feel about having smaller houses. They allow you to work on a specific theme without it becoming so overwhelming or even worse, having you become bored of it. I'm sure when you finish the newport, a buyer is going to love it!

Brae, I completely understand how you feel about your Newport. I can't bear to part with my Beacon Hill because it is from my childhood, but I'd much rather have 2-3 small houses that I could turn into different themes or time periods. I keep finding myself wanting to do unique styles for each room (shabby, girly, modern, PA dutch, weathered) but that just won't work in one big house that you can see all at once. I understand! Good luck with all your future mini plans!
