My feature in The Dolls' House Magazine

by brae

My mood was brightened today when I received my copy of The Dolls' House Magazine all the way from the UK!  In the November 2013 issue, there's a full write-up on The Artist's Studio.

Christiane wrote to me a few months back about featuring the Studio, and we had a nice chat.  It's so wonderful to be featured along with so many other talented artisans!

It was my first time reading the magazine, and there were not only a lot of great builds featured but a number of projects, patterns and tutorials.  A very fine magazine!  Think I'll have to put that on my Christmas list.  ;]

I want to send out a huge thank you to Christiane and the staff at The Dolls' House Magazine for a wonderful feature!  :D

I've been published!

by brae

I just received my first ever print publication!  Miniaturas is a magazine from Spain, and unfortunately, I can't read the text.  But, it is an amazing feeling to have my work published in print.  The quality of the magazine is wonderful, and there are free printed mini projects in each edition.

The Artist's Studio won first place in the 2013 Undersized Urbanite contest hosted by Little Victorian.  Part of the prize was a year's subscription to Miniaturas and a feature in the magazine.

I had dinner with mom last night, and she promptly swiped the magazine to show around her office.  I was able to take two photos beforehand, though.  Once I have it back, I'll be able to show it around my own office.  :D

If you visit the new Undersized Urbanite contest website, you will see that next year I will be on the panel of judges.  :D  I'm excited to see the creative entries take shape!

Hooray!!! The Artist's Studio wins first place!

Christina from Little Victorian contacted me this morning with the good news that The Artist's Studio had won first place!  :D

I get to choose my $100 gift certificate from Michaels, Home Goods or Etsy.  Decisions, decisions!  We winners also will receive a one-year subscription to Miniaturas, a delightful Spanish miniature magazine, along with a feature in the magazine!  Hooray!

Thank you to Christina for a wonderful contest and congratulations to Lyssa and Audra (the other two winners).  I love both their projects!  :D  A big round of applause for all the other contestants, too, for a job very well done!

And a very special thank you to everyone who voted for me!  Your generosity and encouragement mean the world to me!  Thank you!

Sunflower garden

by brae

One of the things I didn't get to before the Undersized Urbanite deadline was making a garden along the left side of the Studio.  I made two sunflowers but I need more!  :D

I've made Bonnie Lavish sunflowers before, and I highly recommend them.

But, I didn't have a kit so I tried to make them from scratch.  I followed this wonderful tutorial at MiniMumm: part 1 and part 2.  I made only a few changes to work with the materials I had on hand.  I used a Martha Stewart punch to make the yellow petals.  I shaped each petal with a stylus, making one long vein down the center.

For the brown centers, I used some scraps of Velour Card Stock from The Crafty PC.  I painted it with a wash of Bittersweet Chocolate by Americana and then used a studio g circle punch once the paint was dry.  I cupped the centers slightly by using a stylus on the back.  I glued the centers to heavy gauge floral wire and let them dry.

I added the petals one at a time around the outer edge.  Once dry, I followed with another round of yellow petals.  I cut more petals from green paper and used those to make the calyx.

For the leaves, I used the leftover Bonnie Lavish leaves since I didn't use them all for the ones I put in the striped vase.  I've ordered more leaves and will make a few more sunflowers using this same method once they arrive.  :D
