That's not the color I wanted...

by brae Email

Ok, minor setback on the cross stitch rug.  I finished the red border and began filling in the center with DMC 712, which was supposed to be cream.  I barely stitched a full corner when the color went from vanilla cream to flat tan.  Bleh!  I expected the cream and the peach/pink tones to compete a bit, but the 712 flattened out the pale green, too.

This reminded me of my kitchen renovation.  I had chosen a beautiful pale terracotta that didn't end up being the dusky desert sunset I expected but more of a garish Pepto Bismol pink.  Yikes!  I could barely contain myself long enough for it to dry before painting over it with a pale almond color...much better.  :D

I thought I would have to use white since the 712 cream color was about as light as the colors come.  From seeing the design with the white fabric background, it wouldn't look bad stitching with white floss.  When I went through my stash of floss, however, I found it -- DMC 746 -- the bright creamy tone I was looking for to begin with.

Before removing the 712 stitching, I did up the opposite corner with 746 just to make sure.  As expected, the peach faded slightly into the background, but the pale green stayed prominent.

Even though I've stitched in some of the bright cream, I am still considering ripping it out and going with white.  I think I need to step back from it a few days and make up my mind once and for all!

Brae, did you try plain old ecru. That's the one without a number, just a name in DMC. I am using one of the overdyed flosses in the Zebra rug. I got the lightest shade that I could find. It is really subtle. There is just a hint of shading here and there. Maybe something like that would work. I hope you find what you are looking for.

The rug is beautiful. Can't wait to see it finished.

The ecru at the store was darker than the 712 I had - so it's 746 or white. The more I look at it, the more I like the white background. In the beginning, I thought about doing white so the pattern would really stand out. Then I seemed to talk myself out of it and into ivory/cream. I suppose the only way to really tell is just do a corner of white and compare. I just hate ripping out stitches...it's so counterproductive. :D

Brae, I have had the same problems with the off-whites.
If you look up a DMC colour chart online, they group colours into 'families', so though you can't see the true colour, you'll get an idea of which way it's heading.
I have found the following
3866 (my favourite) is cool brown
712 is gold-brown
ecru is dark cream all by itself somehow
822 is a warm green-olive
746 is yellow
3865 is yellow
3770 is pink
3024 is grey-green
white is soft white
B5200 is fluoro white

I hope this helps. Of course they change when put next to other colours, as you know. Then it's trial and error, and gaining experience!! :))

Sometimes mixing two similar ones together in the needle helps enormously.
Good luck!

Thanks, Glenda! That does help.

I think what I need to do is stop talking myself out of things and just go with what I want. Would I have a white rug in real life? Not if anyone was going to walk on it!!! :)) But, in mini, why not? And, the white will pick up the colors around it both in the rug and from the walls and furnishings.

Your rug is going to be beautiful, even with the original colour that you started off with. I think one of the problems is that, while stitching, you have been looking at a white background for so long, you got used to it. The original colour will still be okay (in my humble opion) and soften the colour of the completed rug. But still, it's your rug, your dollshouse....... :-)

Hugs

I think the DMC white would be nice. As Glenda says it is a soft white so would be more subtle than even the canvas white which is pretty bright if it is anything like my white canvas.

Brae - re casey's comment about overdyed floss - the DMC one is #4150 which has very subtle colour changes. It's more expensive than the solid colours, but very nice.

RATS! I guess I'll just have to go to the craft store. :))

Casey also suggested I do a test of the white (or whatever color I end up with) in the waste fabric outside the red border so I don't have to keep ripping out stitches in the actual rug area. Great ideas all around - thank you!

Have you thought of using the dark colour you have in the corner? White will show much better the contrast of the light shades, If you can use your draw program to fill the spaces in a photo with various shades, you might avoid stitching and removing . hugs

I like the white too! I would hate for your beautiful creamy colors to get washed out or missed because there isn't enough contrast.

By the way, did you get your Greenleaf Gazette yet? You are in there pretty prominently :)
