Spring Fling - new front door

by brae

There are just 42 days left until the Spring Fling deadline (and the reveal), and I am on schedule to finish a little before then, unlike last year when I just had to cut myself off and take the photos. :D

I'm digging back in the photos to find sneak peeks now since the build is too far along to show anything recent. One change I made to the kit was to replace the laser cut door with a scratch built one made from balsa. This particular sheet of balsa I bought was very dense and nearly like bass wood. It has a lovely grain.

I scored lines on the inside and outside to make it look as though it were made from individual planks.

On the inside, I added cross bar detailing, also using balsa.

I painted the door Clover by Folk Art with a light sanding afterward. The working hinges are from Olde Mountain Miniatures.

I've since added a handle and inside latch by the same maker. :]

Lovely little green door. :D I'm having second thoughts about balsa wood myself. Especially now that I've found out how to seal it so it won't warp... I really like those hinges! Thanks for the link to another supplier I did not know about. Good for you being ahead of schedule for the contest! Can't wait to see the reveal!

Neat latches.. *tries to piece the sneak peeks together and make an educated guess*.

Well done with the door and the colour is good too. I'm intrigued by your spring fling and I'll be piecing the sneak peeks together too. Not that it will happen now that you're on to us - lol.

Oh, I'm pretty sure you all have figured out the basic structure, but I'm certain no one will have guessed exactly what I'm doing with it. ;D I love balsa for its grain and easy of cutting...it's very easily to make rustic timbers from it and to pad walls with it, too. All lot of people don't like it, but I will always have it in my supply stash.
