Memories and gifts

The miniature community lost a talented miniaturist and lovely lady, Elly in Amsterdam.  I knew her through a petitpoint group and never met her in person, but she was one of the sweetest ladies and super fun.  She's definitely missed.  One of her close friends is also a talented miniaturist and is looking after Elly's estate.  Josje has a blog of Elly's miniatures for sale, and I bought two items to have something from Elly.  :]

These cat matryoshkas are beautifully painted and actually function.  There's still a set left as of this post.

Too stinkin' cute!

The coal scuttle is something I don't have a plan for, but it is so well made it could be just an antique used for décor in a more modern setting.  :]

One little coal was included.

Mom gave me two needlework books for Christmas that I'm sure Elly would have loved.  The first is Embroidered Cats by Hiroko Kubota.

While it's not an instruction book and not for beginners, the book illustrates the process of turning a photo into an embroidered likeness.  I might need to see about making a needlework Jasper.  :D  With a little planning, it could probably be done in miniature to make a wall hanging.

The other book is Cluny Tapestry Rabbit, a counted cross-stitch pattern by Scarlet Quince.  Elly made a similar one in miniature for a fire screen.  This is a larger pattern, but with a high count fabric, it might be a good wall tapestry in miniature.

Speaking of stitching, I'm starting some sewing projects over on the sewing side of my blog if you're interested in my other creative endeavors.

Hi Brae. What a perfect selection the cat matryoshka is! It’s kind of dear that Elly decided she needed two of them. She sure did love cats. And it’s kind of intriguing that your mom gave you the embroidered cat book. Elly embroidered many cat portraits for their loving owners (and maybe dogs too?). The Cluny rabbit is lovely. all very nice treats for the eyes which is always the case with your blog. :)

All of these things are so nice. It’s great you’ll have something to remember your friend by.

Last year I went to an estate sale where the materials of three miniaturists were being sold. There was a sadness watching everyone (including me) pick through their things. I was reminded that one day my surplus would surely end up that way, so I try to keep my stash under control, still----. So it is nice to know that as a friend, you will treasure one little piece of Elly and she would be glad that you cared enough to keep some of her pieces.

Brae, thanks for supplying the link to Elly's website... I didn't know about it. I went there straightaway and bought a lot of dollshouse books (ten kilo's worth, it seems!). As I live in the Netherlands, the postage is do-able. I'm going back there later today to see if I can pick up some mini's as well, but most are way out of my price range. (The books weren't.)

Love your blog, I am fairly new to this world but I did come across Josje and Elly's blogs some time ago and recently purchased a tiny pillow embroidered by Elly in the sale of her collection. The detail in the pillow is wondrous ! It made me think of my own collection as no one I know is a fan of minis ! It might all end up in a charity shop, but then again maybe other collectors will buy them ! Your name comes up a lot in various blogs ! love all the content ! huggs Stephanie

The cats are amazing. I am about to visit the site - fingers crossed. I know it sounds weird but the scuttle makes a nice book box, or storage for anything else for that matter in the right sort of room.

Sorry, stupidly hit the send button too fast. Wanted to extend my condolences on the loss of your group member. I was lucky enough to meet some of them with you and they're a fantastic bunch of ladies. I'm sure her presence will be greatly missed.
