Kitchen: casement window and open wall hutch

by brae Email

Before I cut the hole for the new casement window above the sink, I decided to dig out a Daisy House Wall Hutch kit I had in my stash and dry fit it to the wall.

Here's the casement window setup.

Or, I could put the open wall hutch next to the Roper range with a floor cabinet under it.  Here I've borrowed two Newport cabinets for the mockup.

Both of these look nice and era appropriate, so it looks like I'll be keeping the casement window over the sink and using the wall hutch next to the range.  :D

I love the look of a window of the kitchen sink. I have that same one that I am using in the glenwood addition kitchen

I saw someone asking about the stairs going the other way, now I am wondering, if you put in the casement window above the sink (love windows above a sink), do you need the other window next to the refrigerator with the big bay window in the front that will give light to the kitchen. Taking that window away will give you some extra wall space and kitchens in old houses generally didn't have lots of windows.

That's also a good idea, Elga, but there would be no way to plug the hole left by the large window opening. Dura-Craft pieces are different from other kits. They are pre-milled siding pieces cut to specific lengths and you assemble the wall using those pieces. I will be able to get away with redoing the opposite side wall with plywood and added Houseworks siding only because I am recreating the entire wall. Any piecing would show on the outside since I don't have enough spare pieces to plug that hole with the original kit pieces.
