Guest room, part 1

by brae Email

I started building the furniture for the guest room to go with the scratch built bed made from a pattern in Thirties and Forties Miniatures in 1:12 Scale by Jane Harrop.  For the bedside table, I used a House of Miniatures candle stand kit.  It came from a set of two; the other is in Baslow Ranch.

I like the copper table lamps in here, but I am undecided on the ceiling fixture.  I tried a couple of others, and this one seemed to be the best fit for the most part other than the color.  Whichever fixture I end up using, I'll likely paint it copper to match the other two as close as possible.

I hadn't thought much about artwork for this room yet, but when I looked in my stash I found a set of bird images.  Since I've already done a grouping of bird prints, I doubt I'll use them.  I just needed something to fill up the blank wall for balance.

This is closer to the type of art I'll end up using.  These are both by Edward Raymes: Today and Crimson Dusk (left to right).

I scratch built a mirror from frame strip wood and plastic mirror sheet by Darice.  This inexpensive material is awesome...it is thin enough to be cut with scissors to any size or shape and it has a perfect mirror finish.  Much easier than using real glass mirrors for minis.  The mirror looks scratched and cloudy in the photos since I haven't removed the protective film yet.

The dresser is also a House of Miniatures kit - mocked up here without the drawers...or glue for that matter.  :]

I finished all three pieces - the table, mirror and dresser - with IKEA antique pine stain to match the bed.

I sealed the stain with satin varnish by Delta Ceramcoat.  It gives the wood a soft, subtle finish that I think looks very realistic in miniature.

The dresser kit went together flawlessly.  I've used jewelry findings for the knobs.

I just love the finish and details of this dresser...

I love the look of this room! The little hedgehog is so cute. I have that Jane Harrop book as well but have yet to make anything from it. I look forward to seeing more.

p.s. I've seen the magnets/metal system that is holding your mirror in several blogs. What is the system called? It looks so handy.

Thank you both! :D That's a magnetic gluing jig by Micromark. They make great tools for minis. It's a bit pricey, but it's sturdy and indispensable if you make mini furniture or accessories requiring a square fit. It's the type of tool you buy once and have forever.
