Following my blog
by brae
I know I lost a number of followers when Google Friend Connect stopped working for non-blogger blogs. There are a few options that I can help with, though my knowledge on it is minimal. It's all new to me, but I think if you are on blogger and you were already a follower before Google Friend Connect disappeared from my blog, you should still see my blog in your reader/blogger dashboard.
The best thing I suggest to people who ask how to follow my blog is to go to your blogger dashboard and add my blog manually. There's an add button on there. (Updated to show the new blogger interface.)
You click ADD and then type in (or paste) my blog URL: http://www.otterine.com/blog/blog1.php in the pop up box. (For my sewing blog, enter http://www.otterine.com/blog/blog3.php in the box.)
There's one problem with this method, though. If you're already following 300 or more blogs, it will give you an error and you'll have to add me to your google reader instead. There used to be a link on the blogger dashboard for opening google reader (see the first photo above). However, this link is now gone from the blogger screen;
you will need to type in the URL for Google Reader: http://www.google.com/reader/
Once in google reader, click the SUBSCRIBE button and then type in (or paste) my blog URL: http://www.otterine.com/blog/blog1.php in the pop up box. (For my sewing blog, enter http://www.otterine.com/blog/blog3.php in the box.)
This second option in google reader is how I follow blogs without the Google Friend Connect widget.
Additionally, I do have an RSS feed box on the right sidebar that is provided by my blog platform program. I think to sign up with the RSS feed, you need to click the word "posts" after the word "Atom" in that box, and you should see an option to add me to your Google Reader. Some have said this doesn't work for them, but I know next to nothing about RSS feeds to be of more help with that specifically.
If you don't use either google reader or blogger dashboard to follow blogs or can't get the RSS feed to work for you, then I'm afraid my help stops there. I wish I could offer more.
UPDATE: Google Reader will be closed on July 1, 2013. I am working on a new way to follow my blog and will have a post about it in the next month or so.
