Cross stitch rug background colors

by brae Email

I am back from my vacation and ready to get back to the Newport!  I did manage to work on the altered Janet Granger rug while away.  At just under 70 hours, the entire design is done!  :D

Now comes the long process of filling in the background colors.  I am sold on the rusty red for the outer border but I am torn between the vanilla and silver-grey for the interior.  My plan is to work on the red border for now and decide on the inner portion once that's done.

I think the vanilla will be really rich looking - like red velvet cake with butter cream frosting.  Yum!  But, the silver-grey has its appeal as well - the peach and pink floral shapes will likely stand out more against the silver-grey.  Anyone care to weigh in?  :D

I love that carpet! And the deep red border is absolutely a yes, but difficult to say which background color I like the best - I think that with vanilla it's going to look more traditional, with silver gray more modern - like them both :) Not much help from here :)

I love it as it is but I know it is not finished. You may be right about the silver thread, the apricot may be lost against a cream background, it is difficult to tell. The cream would probably be the traditional colour to use.

I think that you are spot on with your comments on the beige and gray. I don't remember where you said you were going to use the rug. I think that should be the deciding factor. Which will go better with the rest of the room? It is beautiful!

Hi Brae!
That is an amazing work of art!!
The vanilla is a much more traditional look and would look lovely, letting the other colors be the focal point. I agree with Ira that the grey is a much more modern feel; I would only worry that grey would wash out the beautiful curling stems of the flowers and we would lose that detail. Without knowing the setting, might also work to chose a deeper saturated color? Have you tried playing in paint?

Thanks for the input! :D I think this rug will be used in the Newport, though I have a kit in the closet that keeps popping into my head when I work on this rug...that build is way off, after the Newport is done. So, I think I need to consider the rug as a standalone piece and decide on the colors based on what I like. My first instinct was the vanilla, so that is likely what I will go with. But, I have quite awhile to mull it over since filling in takes more time than just following the pattern.
